Music Theory I

This course involves the analysis and writing of tonal melody and diatonic harmony up to and including 7th chords. Analysis and writing of small compositional forms and correlated study at the keyboard is also included. Corequisite: MUSI 1116.

Music Theory II

This course is the study of analysis and writing of tonal melody and diatonic harmony, including all diatonic chords and seventh chords in root position and inversions, non-chord tones, and functional harmony. Introduction to more complex topics, such as modulation, may occur. Optional correlated study at the keyboard. Corequisite: MUSI 1117.

Prerequisite: MUSI 1311.

Music Theory III

This course contains advanced harmony part writing and keyboard analysis and writing of more advanced tonal harmony, including chromatics and extended tertian structures. It includes an introduction to 20th century compositional procedures, survey of the traditional large forms of compositional and correlated study at the keyboard.

Music Theory IV
